BIOGRAPHY

Experimenting with new techniques and ideas, Laukkanen tests how far they can be stretched to create unique silver pieces for those who pause to see the actual meaning. As a blacksmith, welder and metal artisan, the material she works with varies from delicate pieces of silver to large iron forgings and weldings. The forge is located in the southeastern archipelago of the Gulf of Finland. The sea, the cliffs, and the rugged forests offer a well of constant inspiration for the work.

SHADOW

The piece, made from shreds of leftover silver, explores the use of light as a design element, studying how much a portrait can be simplified while still retaining the essential features of an individual.

Polished horizontal silver stripes reveal a ghostly portrait only when caught at the right angle of light. Slight movement, and the figure disappears. The glimpse of a familiar face vanishes to obscurity and deformation.

DANDELION

A surface sawn into rays creates a shimmering texture of dandelion bristles. The hollow silhouette of the receptacle reveals the back plate’s ground and patinated texture, adding depth to the human figure in symbiosis with the plant, blending into it.

The piece is a tribute to Laukkanen’s late grandfather and his intellectual heritage: the tradition of seeing beauty and wonder in small details, and the skill to make it visible to others.

Curatorial Comment

“Aino Laukkanen’s work explores the relationship between surface, absence, and perception through a refined and deeply material approach to jewelry. Her pieces emerge from a process of reduction, where form is stripped down to essential gestures and the metal itself becomes a field of visual and tactile investigation.

Rather than functioning as decorative objects, these works operate as intimate studies of light, texture, and transformation. Engraved lines, perforations, and subtle reliefs create shifting optical effects that change according to movement and viewpoint, inviting a slower and more attentive gaze.

In one piece, the metal surface opens into an almost organic void, generating a tension between solidity and emptiness. In another, rhythmic horizontal stripes produce a vibrating reflection that destabilizes the perception of the form itself. The jewelry becomes an interface between presence and disappearance, precision and imperfection.

Laukkanen’s practice reflects a distinctly sculptural sensibility, where the discipline of metalwork meets a conceptual investigation into space and perception. The result is a body of work that feels both minimal and emotionally resonant — quiet objects capable of holding complexity within restraint.“
